FLSME 2015 Teacher of the Year / Mining Ambassador
School Mini-Grant (Elementary, Middle or High School)
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) is an international society of professionals in the minerals industry. The organization evolved to promote knowledge exchange, propagate information and validate professional achievement among peers. Professional development and information exchange have been watchwords at SME from the beginning. SME sets itself apart from other professional organizations by its dedication to K-12 education through its teacher resources such as the Minerals Information Institute (MII), the Mineral Education Coalition (MEC) and student education programs which include mentoring, the Student Center and Young Leaders program. The Florida section of SME is seeking applications from teachers in Hardee, Hillsborough, Desoto, Manatee and Polk Counties for the 2015 SME Mining Ambassador of the Year. It is anticipated that Florida SME will honor a deserving teacher actively instructing Elementary, Middle and High School students. We are posting this announcement so that you can apply as a candidate and/or forward it on to someone you consider to be a good candidate for this award. Florida SME plans to grant the qualified winner with a $500 individual award and a $500 award for his/her school. A letter of recommendation is required from the candidate’s principal. The application deadline is May 15, 2015.
In addition, Florida SME is also offering school mini-grants in Hardee, Hillsborough, Desoto, Manatee and Polk Counties to encourage teachers to think outside the box and provide resources that will promote opportunities for students to engage in relevant science projects. To apply, you must describe your project, materials needed, methods and expected outcomes and the cost for resources with an estimated completion date. A written report must be submitted one month after completion of the project. The application deadline for these grants is May 15, 2015. The application requires your principal’s signature.
